When fragrance is too much: a considerate guide to scent sensitivity

A beautiful home does not require everyone inside it to tolerate the same scent. Consideration is part of the aesthetic.

Take discomfort seriously

Headache, nausea, coughing, irritation, or a simple sense of overwhelm are reasons to stop, ventilate, and return to neutral. You do not need to push through a scent because it was expensive or popular.

Ask before scenting shared space

Roommates, guests, children, and pets do not have the same ability to leave or make a choice. Keep fragrance optional, brief, and easy to remove.

Make neutral beautiful

Fresh air, clean textiles, an open curtain, and a glass of water can be a complete ritual. Unscented is not empty; it is a deliberate reset.

A simple way to try it

  1. Notice the first sign of discomfort and turn scent off.
  2. Ventilate shared spaces before and after fragrance.
  3. Keep at least one daily ritual completely fragrance-free.
A gentle note: Thoughtful use matters: keep aromatic products away from children and pets; do not ingest oils; use only products and dilutions appropriate to their labels; stop if a scent causes discomfort.
